What does a butler do?

Wadsworth: I'm merely a humble butler.
Col. Mustard: What exactly do you do?
Wadsworth: I buttle, sir.
Col. Mustard: Which means what?
Wadsworth: The butler is in charge of the kitchen and dining room. I keep everything tidy.

- from the movie Clue

Apparently butlers are expensive. At least, the ones in WoW will be. I guess it’s because they will do more than run the kitchen and dining room. Our butlers will buy our junk, fetch our clothes, mend our armor and sell us reagents. Here’s the list of materials, if you happen to be lucky enough to find the plans by salvaging a mechanical in Northrend.

Field Repair Bot 74A x 2, Field Repair Bot 110G x 10, Scrapbot Construction Kit x 20, Titansteel Bar x 8, King's Amber x 2, Handful of Cobalt Bolts x 30.

Phew! That’s a lotta cash for a butler! First, to my knowledge the Field Repair Bot 74A plans drop in Blackrock Depths and I don’t have them. So, the guild will have to forgive me for pilfering one of the bots from the bank. Hopefully I’ll find another one for a reasonable amount on the auction house. The rest of the materials I can craft myself, though the farming time for khorium ore alone could take a while and Jeeves will require 30 bars. The sad part is that I had a lot of khorium and primal fire left over from the Burning Crusade days that I sold last spring. If I had only been a pack rat and saved all that junk! A rough estimate of the cost for parts will be about 2000 to 2500 gold.

From a money making prospective, if you don’t care about Jeeves and you are an engineer…well, if that’s the case than you don’t deserve to be an engineer! But anyway, for those who are unworthy or those who make their Jeeves and want to provide parts, you can make a lot of money off your brethren in patch 3.2 just by crafting repair bots and selling them at ridiculous prices.

So, when 3.2 is released, you’ll find me in the Storm Peaks farming mechanicals for my butler.

  1. I can´t for the life of me understand why a mechanical butler that I owned would BUY my trash. What is it going to do with these trash items? Where does it get the money it gives me for them? And, since it is MY mechanical butler, isn´t it MY money in the first place?

Reagents? It sells me reagents? Where does it get them? And why is my device SELLING me my reagents rather than just giving me them?

This whole thing has been very badly thought out for an item in a Role-Playing Game.

  2. Hey Rorik, I saw your site on Greedy Goblins, and wanted to say hello. It's always nice to see another person passionate about engineering.

  3. Thanks Bloodshrike and welcome!

And yes, you'd think that a butler would just have a stack of reagents to give you. I'm just happy to be able to have him soon.

  4. Think of it like this instead, you give him cash so that that he can go buy more of the reagents. That way he can ensure he has more of it to give you next time.
As for selling trash, just think of it as him running off and selling it to another merchant when you dismiss him. (I know, there's the time issue, but meh)

  5. Ugh... I love the whole idea of Jeeves but to the person above... Is it really necessary to have a valid rationalization of the behavior of a handful of assorted pixels dancing on your screen? If so.. then look at it this way...

    - Buying: he inventories your stuff contacts the ye-olde pawn shop and gets a total of what they are worth and simply give you the money in advance. You pay him well so he can afford to do such things...

    - Selling: Ever heard of the word consignment? The guy who owns the ye-olde pawn shop also sells reagents on the side and to go that extra mile allows butlers of high profile clients keep some of his inventory in their possession so he is a lock to get your business.

    - As for it being your butler... yes, he is indeed in your employ but surely you don't consider him a slave do you? Have you not seen the STNG episode where it was found even robots had a heart...

OMG I can't believe I'm actually doing this...
